The Turkish Statistical Institute has published the “Cinema and Performing Arts Statistics” bulletin for 2021.
Accordingly, the number of movie theaters across Turkey decreased by 11.1% in 2021 compared to the previous year and became 2 thousand 398. During this period, the number of seats in movie theaters decreased by 10.3 percent and was recorded as 285 thousand 130.
The number of cinema audiences decreased by 27.9 percent compared to 2020 and fell to 12 million 418 thousand 777 people last year. While the number of domestic movie audiences decreased by 75.4 percent to 3 million 264 thousand 580 people, the number of foreign movie audiences increased by 130.5 percent to 9 million 154 thousand 197 people.
In the same period, the number of movies shown increased by 2 percent to 26,483. While the number of domestic films shown decreased by 9.1 percent to 9 thousand 981, the number of foreign films shown increased by 10.1 percent to 16 thousand 502.
The theater audience has dwindled.
In the 2020-2021 season, the number of theaters decreased by 44.4 percent compared to the previous season, while the number of theater seats decreased by 41.8 percent. In the same season, the number of theater halls was 400 and the number of theater seats was 156,9.
The number of theater spectators decreased by 84.1 percent in this period to 714 thousand 864. The number of plays performed in theaters decreased by 73.3 percent compared to the previous season and became 1665.
The number of copyrighted (domestic) works played in theater halls decreased by 74.4 percent, and the number of translated (foreign) works decreased by 66.6 percent. Compared to the previous season, the number of audience for copyrighted works in the theater decreased by 83.6 percent and the number of audience for translated works decreased by 85.5 percent.
Compared to the previous season, the number of shows played in theaters decreased by 78.8 percent to 4 thousand 284. The number of shows of copyrighted works played in theaters decreased by 78.6 percent, and the number of performances of translated works decreased by 79.4 percent.
While the number of adult performances performed in theaters decreased by 73.5 percent, the number of children’s performances decreased by 86.1 percent and was recorded as 1174.
The number of spectators for adult works decreased by 80.7 percent, while the number of spectators for children’s works decreased by 89.6 percent. The number of children’s works performed in theaters decreased by 84.5 percent and the number of adult works performed decreased by 62.8%.
Opera and ballet performances were held in 6 cities
Opera and ballet performances affiliated to the General Directorate of Opera and Ballet were held in 6 provinces throughout Turkey in the 2020-2021 season. 6 orchestras, 13 choirs and 9 ensembles operated under the General Directorate of Fine Arts.
The number of opera and ballet spectators decreased by 94.5 percent in the 2020-2021 season, compared to the previous season, to 14 thousand 32. The number of spectators in orchestras, choirs and ensembles decreased by 54.8 percent to 72 thousand 277.
The number of orchestra spectators decreased by 86.1 percent compared to the previous season and decreased to 13 thousand 907, the number of choir audience decreased by 12.7% to 22 thousand 792, while the number of ensemble audience increased by 5.8 percent to 35 thousand 578.
The number of orchestra, choir and ensemble shows decreased by 26.5 percent compared to the previous season and decreased to 314. In the 2020-2021 season, orchestras performed 48 performances, choirs 158 and ensembles 108 performances.
