France: Mayor demands ‘funeral deposit’ from mountaineers climbing Mont Blanc

According to Peillex, climbers must pay a deposit of 15,000 euros, 10,000 for the removal of dead bodies and 5,000 for funerals, before climbing Mont Blanc in case of a fatal accident.

According to the news in Euronews, Peillex’s proposal is as follows: “Everyone should be aware that this has consequences for idiots who break the rules. It has human consequences for them because they can die. On the other hand, there are also human consequences for the rescuers who go to search for the dead body or rescue them.” explained.

Mountaineers in the Aosta Valley region in Italy have to pay for the rescue calls they made as a result of their own carelessness. The Municipality of Saint Gervais follows this practice and wants to reopen the discussion of the free mountain search and rescue work.

“This doesn’t preclude real rescue work being free of charge. However, this applies to real help. It doesn’t apply to accidents caused by those who want to take risks or disobey orders,” says Peillex.
